The European Crohn’s and Colitis Organization and the European Federation of Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis Associations presented their finalized ECCO-EFCCA Patient Guidelines at a press conference at the ECCO Congress, according to a press release.

These guidelines have been a collaborative effort between the two societies with the aim of helping “patients to understand the latest clinical research and provide them with valuable information on their disease.”

Two task forces focusing on ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, respectively, which involved patients, physicians and nurses, selected statements from ECCO clinical guidelines they deemed most relevant to patients, and then translated these statements into plain language, according to the press release. The task forces convened in November 2015, and since then have been working on finalizing the patient guidelines.

The final versions of the patient guidelines for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis contain 50 carefully selected statements each, with a focus on “clinical symptoms, diagnostic approach and management of active disease, and maintenance of remission — the key topics a person living with IBD would be interested in,” according to a separate press release. Also included are statements on symptoms and treatment of frequent external manifestations of IBD, and a shared glossary and visual aid.

“The document should help IBD patients to better understand their disease, the agreed therapy algorithms and ultimately result in better treatment and improved quality of life,” according to the press release.
