Case Challenges in Pediatric Fatty Liver: What to Look For and When to Refer
Click Here to Manage Email Alerts
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterized by excess fat deposition in the liver due to causes other than alcohol consumption and tends to develop in individuals who are overweight, obese or have diabetes, hypercholesterolemia or hypertriglyceridemia. With the growing obesity epidemic, pediatric NAFLD is on the rise. Left unmanaged, NAFLD may progress to cause progressive fibrosis and cirrhosis. Children with NAFLD may not present with symptoms or elevated liver function tests, and may often be misdiagnosed with mimics of the disease. In this activity, a discussion between a leading hepatologist and pediatrician will elucidate the pathogenesis, risk factors, screening recommendations, differential diagnostic strategies, management, and prevention of pediatric NAFLD using a case-based approach.
