“We are humbled that our patient-focused academic practice is once again being recognized as the pinnacle in gastroenterology and hepatology,” Vijay Shah, MD, chair of the division of gastroenterology and hepatology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., told Healio Gastroenterology. “It reflects a committed and talented staff that interface within a remarkably integrated system to provide safe and high-quality care for patients suffering from digestive diseases around the region, country and the world.”

The top ten hospitals for gastroenterology and GI surgery were ranked as follows:

  • Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.
  • Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio
  • Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston
  • UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles
  • Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore
  • Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles
  • UPMC-University of Pittsburgh Medical Center
  • Mount Sinai Hospital, New York City
  • Mayo Clinic, Phoenix
  • Houston Methodist Hospital

The report included an evaluation of the top 50 hospitals in gastroenterology and GI surgery. Each candidate received an overall score from 0 to 100 that was based on four elements: reputation, patient survival, patient safety and care-related factors. The hospitals with the top 50 scores in gastroenterology and GI surgery were ranked.

“This ranking underscores our long-standing commitment to provide the highest-quality care that best meets our patients’ needs,” John Noseworthy, MD, president and CEO, Mayo Clinic, said in a press release. “Mayo Clinic is fortunate to be ranked No. 1 in more specialties than any other hospital in the nation. We owe our success to staff members who dedicate themselves daily to this shared mission.”
