Expert Analysis on Mild-to-Moderate Ulcerative Colitis
Defining and Addressing Factors That Affect Outcomes.
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are reaching epidemic proportions worldwide, with an estimated prevalence of 1% in North America. The increasing burden on patients, their families, and the health care system is accompanied by an increased risk of immediate and long-term mortality in persons afflicted with these diseases, of which ulcerative colitis is the most common. Appropriate management of ulcerative colitis requires accurate assessment of disease severity, understanding the treatment options available for both induction of remission and maintenance at each level of severity, and appreciating the important role of treatment adherence.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- List the factors which affect and influence evidence-based care and patient outcomes in the treatment of ulcerative colitis.
- Individualize pharmacologic treatment of mild-to-moderate ulcerative colitis by taking into consideration differences in pharmacokinetics, efficacy, tolerability, patient preferences, and dosing.
- Assess the consequences of non-adherence to therapy in ulcerative colitis and incorporate strategies that improve adherence and patient outcomes.
