Ulcerative colitis can be a debilitating condition, having a substantial impact on a patient’s quality of life and resulting in a considerable economic burden. For patients suffering with mild to moderate disease, a number of treatment options are emerging that can significantly reduce symptoms while minimizing the need for chronic use of corticosteroids. A leading panel of experts will review the classification criteria for the disease, latest data on the safety, efficacy, and appropriate utilization of these newer agents, as well as quality measures intended to improve patient outcomes. Additionally, the European perspective concerning diagnosis, treatment, and emerging therapies will be provided.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Assess classification criteria for ulcerative colitis that determine the extent and severity of the disease process and provide a framework in which to develop a treatment plan.
  • Analyze current and emerging evidence-based treatment strategies that induce positive clinical responses in patients with ulcerative colitis.
  • Describe quality measures for the management of ulcerative colitis and how current and emerging therapies can be implemented to help achieve them.
