Endoscopic overtube improved adenoma, polyp detection rates
Two recent industry studies found that an endoscopic overtube significantly improved colonoscopic adenoma and polyp detection, according to a press release from the manufacturer.
“The Endocuff device has proven to significantly enhance the physician’s ability to visualize and examine the mucosa,” Jorgen Hansen, president of Medivators, said in the release. “This is crucial to achieving our goal of improving screening and saving lives.”
The Endocuff, a disposable plastic overtube with soft, flexible projections, increases control and flattens colonic folds for better mucosa examination when placed over the tip of the endoscope, the release said. It is radio opaque, latex-free and fits most Olympus, Pentax and Fujinon colonoscopes.
Study data published in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology and presented at DDW 2014 found that the Endocuff increased adenoma (86%) and polyp detection (63%) per patient compared with standard colonoscopy. The most significant improvements in detection were in the sigmoid and cecum. Gastrointestinal Endoscopyreported similar results, and a study assessing the operator learning curve showed that after four procedures significantly more adenomas were detected, the release said.
Physicians reported the Endocuff also helps with complex polyp removal. “The Endocuff device reduces slippage and acts as a ‘handbrake’ during EMR and polypectomy,” Hansen said. “This helps the physician maintain a steady view during complicated procedures while instruments are fed through the biopsy channel.”
