The Gastric Cancer Foundation has appointed three new board members and announced a research funding partnership with the American Gastroenterological Association, according to a press release.

The new board members include K. Alice Leung, founder and principal of Sapientiae; Hossein Ghanbari, PhD, co-founder, CEO, chief scientific officer and chairman of Panacea Pharmaceuticals; and Paul Gottsegen, senior vice president, chief marketing and strategy officer of Mindtree.

The partnership with the AGA Research Foundation will award an endowment of $2.25 million, with each organization committing $1.125 million to young researchers in the field of GI tract cancers, according to the release. Members of each organization will jointly review proposals and determine recipients, with the first AGA-GCF Research Scholar Award in Gastric and Esophageal Cancer to be presented during 2014.

“After the sad passing of our founder, J.P. Gallagher, we have strategically appointed three important new board members, developed a significant research partnership with the AGA and solidified our research grant program,” Wayne Feinstein, chairman of the foundation’s board of directors, said in the release. “The best way to fight stomach cancer is to grow awareness, fund research and develop energetic partnerships. We’re proud to achieve all three in 2013.”
