Emergency Birth Control Options
For when birth control is needed after sexual intercourse, there are a few options to discuss with patients.
The Yuzpe method, which is effective within 3 days of unprotected sex, requires two doses of a combination estrogen/progestin oral contraceptive taken 12 hours apart.
The ella pill (ulipristal, HRA Pharma) and levonorgestrel are all options that are effective within 5 days of unprotected sex.
There are a few levonorgestrel options on the market, which include Plan B One-Step (Duramed Pharmaceuticals), Next Choice One Dose (Foundation Consumer Healthcare), Next Choice (H.J. Harkins Co.), EContra One-Step (Aurobindo Pharma), My Way (Lupin Pharmaceuticals) and AfterPill (Syzygy Healthcare Solutions).
Finally, a copper IUD may be placed up to 7 days after unprotected sex and is also a long-term birth control option.
