Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptives

Long-acting reversible birth control allows patients to set and forget, with some options lasting a year and others lasting up to 12 years.

Hormonal IUDs can last 3 to 8 years. Options include:

  • Mirena (levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system, Bayer);
  • Skyla (levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system, Bayer);
  • Liletta (levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system, AbbVie); and             
  • Kyleena (levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system, Bayer).
  • Paragard (intrauterine copper device, CooperSurgical) is a nonhormonal IUD that lasts up to 12 years.

Nexplanon (etonogestrel implant, Merck) is an implant option that lasts up to 5 years.

Finally, Annovera (segesterone acetate/ethinyl estradiol vaginal system, TherapeuticsMD) is a birth control ring effective for 1 year but must be removed once a week every month.
