Key takeaways:

  • Physicians must be educated on digital therapeutics before they are implemented into practice.
  • A toolkit is available to educate physicians on digital therapeutics.

WASHINGTON — In this video, Benjamin Alouf, MD, MBA, FAAP, chief medical officer at Limbix Health, talks about the need to educate physicians about digital therapeutics.

During a panel discussion at the Digital Therapeutics Alliance (DTA) Summit, Alouf discussed ways patients and providers can be included in the design of digital therapeutics (DTx).

“We did a workshop where we took those ideas and we operationalized them,” Alouf said in the video. “[We] really broke them down into their parts and how we can most impact the ability of patients to access these devices through their provider that again is nondisruptive and conducive to the continuum of that patient-provider relationship.”

Those who took part in the workshop identified the limited time during patient visits, billing, tech issues and the abundance of patient portals as obstacles to implementing DTx. Ideas to educate providers on the benefits of DTx and integrate them into practice included educational luncheons, identifying tech support and adding chapters about DTx in medical textbooks.

Following the workshop, DTA announced its DTx Evaluation Toolkit, which can be used to learn more about DTx and implement them into practice.

“In 2024, we will host another session to take the ideas discussed here and move them forward,” Lani Hessen, OTR/L, vice president of patient access at DTA, told Healio.
