Adults diagnosed with diabetes at age 60 years or younger were at a heightened risk for developing dementia, according to an analysis of Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study data.

No association was found between dementia risk and prediabetes, suggesting that slowing prediabetes progression could “have an important impact on the overall burden of dementia,” Michael Fang, PhD, assistant scientist in epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, told Healio. It was the top story in endocrinology last week.

Another top story covered study results that found women in midlife were more likely to attempt weight loss multiple times and perceive themselves as having overweight if they had polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The study was the first to indicate that “normal-weight women with PCOS also struggle with their body image,” Emilia Pesonen, MSc, doctoral researcher in the department of obstetrics and gynecology, research unit of clinical medicine at the University of Oulu in Finland, told Healio.
