SAN DIEGO — There are several new cardiology updates on treatment and concepts regarding heart failure, hypertension and aging, according to a speaker at the ACP Internal Medicine Meeting.

Clyde W. Yancy, MD, MSc, MACP, MACC, FAHA, FHFSA, said that “we now have definitive evidence that we can change the natural history of cardiovascular disease referable to dyslipidemia in a variety of ways that we never thought was possible.”

“We’ve always known we could use statins. Now we can use bempedoic acid, that seemingly has some important benefit, and we know there’s some new therapies on the horizon," he said.

He also pointed out that for the first time, we have a comparative dataset that shows what happens with the small dose of a statin versus this whole plethora of over-the-counter homeopathic drugs.”

Meanwhile, for hypertension that is difficult to treat, “the new information shows that if we target aldosterone synthase, we may see the most dramatic reductions in blood pressure with an oral formulation that we’ve not yet seen before,” Yancy said.
