SAN DIEGO — Health care delivery models continue to shift away from fee-for-service toward value-based care, representing opportunities for private practices, according to a speaker at the ACP Internal Medicine Meeting.

“Since 2016, value-based payments have been comprising an increasing percent of the payments for health care services in the U.S. as the percentage of payments accounted for by fee-for-service has come down,” Joshua M. Liao, MD, MSc, FACP, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine, said.

Even throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, “those trends have been stable rather than reversing,” he added.

During his presentation, Liao and colleagues also discussed the roles of operational building blocks like quality performance, data and technology, social drivers of health, risk adjustment and individual and group incentives.

“We did all this to highlight the fact that value-based payment is an opportunity for private practices as they go forth thinking about how to deliver quality and cost-efficient care to their patients,” he said.
