VIDEO: ‘Continuity, comprehensiveness’ are where IM physicians excel, ACP president says
During medical school, ACP President Ryan D. Mire, MD, MACP, said he was drawn to internal medicine because of “the depth of knowledge, the clinical expertise and the thought process that went into solving a patient’s problem.”
“This really intrigued me academically, and it made me realize that my mission was to think through problems, very similar to a detective in the law enforcement industry,” he told Healio.
Internal medicine physicians, he added, not only manage the physical aspects of patient care, “but we also factor in the social and emotional issues that affect one’s health.”
“Continuity and comprehensiveness are where we actually excel in taking care of our patients,” he said.
On National Internal Medicine Day, recognized annually on Oct. 28, Mire said he wants to thank his fellow internal medicine physicians “for all the care that you have provided to patients.”
“I appreciate you. ACP appreciates you. And we have really shown value to the specialty and field of internal medicine across this country,” he said.
