CHICAGO — In this video, Sheila Tsai, MD, a sleep medicine physician at National Jewish Health in Denver, discusses how to screen, diagnose and treat obstructive sleep apnea and obesity hypoventilation syndrome.

Obstructive sleep apnea affects about 5% of men and 3% of women, and obesity hypoventilation affects about 0.4% of the general U.S. population, according to Tsai. Ninety percent of patients with obesity hypoventilation have obstructive sleep apnea.

Tsai shared the key messages related to these sleep disorders from her presentation at the ACP Internal Medicine Meeting.

“It’s important to ask about sleep issues and suspect them so that we can adequately treat our patients,” she said.
