VIDEO: Common mistakes that group practices make and how to avoid them
Physicians in small and medium group practices often prioritize clinical matters over corporate governance and management responsibility, according to Shena Scott, MBA, FACMPE, founder and CEO of Scott Healthcare Consulting Inc.
This is one of the biggest mistakes that these practices can make, Scott told Healio Primary Care.
Although it is “human nature” for physicians to tend to clinical issues, Scott said they then “get very far in the weeds with management” and neglect efforts to plan for the future of their practice.
“What I recommend is to separate those three functions and have a clinical council that is overseeing clinical matters, empower your management to handle the day-to-day responsibilities, and then have a smaller board that is really focused specifically on strategy and planning for the future,” she said.
Scott and Genie Blough, MBA, FACMPE, principal of G Blough & Associates, LLC, recently discussed the importance of having a strong governance model at the Medical Practice Excellence Leaders Conference. In this video, Scott discusses highlights from their presentation, “The 10 biggest mistakes your small- to medium-sized group can make.”
