There are 2 to 3 million people with type 1 diabetes in the United States, and about half of them are managed by general internists, according to Guillermo E. Umpierrez, MD, MACP, president-elect of the American Diabetes Association.

In this video, Umpierrez, who is also a professor of medicine at Emory University School of Medicine, discusses highlights from his presentation at the virtual ACP Internal Medicine Meeting on important updates in diabetes management.

There are about 15 types of insulin for patients with type 1 diabetes, and newer formulations have shown to improve glycemic control and reduce hypoglycemic events, Umpierrez said during his presentation. When making treatment decisions, he encouraged physicians to rely on continuous glucose monitoring values.

Umpierrez also discussed recommendations for managing patients with type 2 diabetes and the role of GLP-1 receptor agonists and SGLT2 inhibitors, which help improve glycemic control and reduce major adverse cardiovascular events. They also have been shown to reduce the progression of end-stage kidney disease, Umpierrez said.
