AMA announces CPT codes for AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine

The AMA has updated the CPT code set to include immunization and administration codes specific to the AstraZeneca and University of Oxford COVID-19 vaccine.

The codes go into effect immediately upon its approval or emergency use authorization (EUA) by the FDA, according to the AMA.

In a press release, the AMA said the Category I CPT code and long descriptor for the AstraZeneca and University of Oxford vaccine is:

• 91302: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, DNA, spike protein, chimpanzee adenovirus Oxford 1 (ChAdOx1) vector, preservative-free, 5x10¹⁰ viral particles/0.5mL dosage, for intramuscular use

The administration codes and long descriptors for administering the vaccine and all necessary counseling provided to patients or caregivers and for updating the electronic record are:

• 0021A: Immunization administration by intramuscular injection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, DNA, spike protein, chimpanzee adenovirus Oxford 1 (ChAdOx1) vector, preservative free, 5x10¹⁰ viral particles/0.5mL dosage; first dose
• 0022A; second dose

Last month, AMA announced CPT codes specific to the COVID-19 vaccines developed by Pfizer and Moderna. The Pfizer vaccine has been granted an EUA, and an advisory committee recommended an EUA for Moderna’s vaccine late yesterday.

“The ability to correlate each COVID-19 vaccine with its own unique CPT code provides analytical and tracking advantages that ensures optimal vaccine distribution and administration, especially for patients who will need to complete the two-dose immunization schedule,” AMA President Susan Bailey, MD, said in the press release.
