Dec. 1 marks the 32nd annual World AIDS Day, which was started to support people living with HIV/AIDS and to commemorate those who have died from the disease.

By the end of 2018, the CDC estimated that 1.2 million people in the United States were living with HIV, 14% of whom were not yet diagnosed.

This year’s theme for World AIDS Day, “Global solidarity, shared responsibility,” was chosen in recognition of how the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the role health plays in other issues, including inequality, human rights, social protection, economic growth and gender equality, according to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDs.
