Since 1984, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America has declared May as National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month. One common type of allergy is pet allergy, according to the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care.

Pet allergy affects at least 1 in 10 people worldwide, according to Lakiea Wright, MD, a board certified allergist and associate physician at Brigham Women’s Hospital. She said properly diagnosing pet allergy requires taking a detailed look at a patient’s history, environment and the proteins that are causing the allergy.

“Dive a little deeper into the pet allergy components,” Wright told Healio Primary Care. “Ask what’s unique to the particular species of allergen and what is cross reactive.”

In this video interview, Wright provided context to her recommendations and offered suggestions on treatment. by Janel Miller
