Mayo Clinic rated best hospital nationwide

Mayo Clinic has been ranked the No. 1 hospital in the nation for the third consecutive year by the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals survey.
Along with its overall top ranking, Mayo Clinic also ranked No. 1 in six specialties, including diabetes and endocrinology; gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery; geriatrics; gynecology; nephrology; and neurology and neurosurgery. Mayo Clinic is recognized as having more No. 1 rankings than any other hospital in the country. In addition, Mayo Clinic ranked in the top five hospitals for cancer; cardiology and heart surgery; ear, nose and throat; orthopedics; pulmonology; rheumatology and urology.

The report compared more 4,500 medical centers in 25 specialties, procedures and conditions. There were 158 hospitals that were ranked this year in at least one specialty. Twenty hospitals earned the distinction of the Honor Roll, awarded to those that deliver exceptionally high-quality treatment across multiple areas of care:

3. Johns Hopkins Hospital
4. Massachusetts General Hospital
5. University of Michigan Hospitals-Michigan Medicine
6. University of California San Francisco Medical Center
7. University of California Los Angeles
8. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center
9. Stanford Health Care-Stanford Hospital
10. New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia and Cornell
11. (tie) Barnes-Jewish Hospital
11. (tie) Mayo Clinic Phoenix
13. Northwestern Memorial Hospital
14. Hospitals of the University of Pennsylvania-Penn Presbyterian
15. (tie) NYU Langone Hospitals

17. Vanderbilt University Medical Center
18. Mount Sinai Hospital

In the specialty rankings, the hospitals that ranked first in cardiology and heart surgery, cancer and orthopedics were Cleveland Clinic, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and Hospital for Special Surgery, respectively.
Hospital quality was measured and based on a methodology that factored in risk-adjusted survival and readmission rates, volume, patient experience, patient safety and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators.
