VIDEO: Expert discusses substance use disorders in hospitalized patients
NEW ORLEANS — Keri Holmes-Maybank, MD, hospitalist and rehabilitation medicine expert from the Medical University of South Carolina, discussed screening and treatment for substance use disorders in hospitalized patients at the ACP Internal Medicine Meeting.
When screening hospitalized patients for alcohol use disorders, Holmes-Maybank recommends using the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT-C) as well as the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-(Piccinelli) Consumption (AUDIT-PC) or the Prediction of Alcohol Withdrawal Severity Scale (PAWSS) for patients with alcohol withdrawal.
She also discusses when to use alcohol withdrawal prophylaxis, how to treat patients on methadone or buprenorphine, and the importance of offering patients with substance use disorders resources for detox and outpatient treatment.
