VIDEO: Hockey Hall of Famer says more research needed on concussions

PHILADELPHIA – Hockey League Hall of Famer and former Philadelphia Flyer Eric Lindros recently called for more research into concussions.

Lindros, who suffered at least six concussions during his playing career, made the comments at a news conference in late January when his number was retired.

“I’m glad that things have progressed ... I just wish there was more research we could rely upon for change [and] to have a foundation of basic research to draw from and people working collectively to come up with some solutions,” he said.

“We’re nowhere near where we need to be [on diagnosing concussions quicker and treating concussions differently],” he added.

Healio Family Medicine recently interviewed several other retired professional athletes whose careers were affected by concussions. Randy Cross statements’ mirrored Lindros’ wish for for more research into concussions, while former NHL All-Star Keith Primeau suggested primary care physicians may need to educate themselves more on concussions as they affect more children and school-age athletes. – by Janel Miller.
