Autism disorder: What you need to know

Approximately one in 68 children have autism, according to data cited by Autism Speaks. This includes one in 42 boys and one in 189 girls. The data also show that more than 3.5 million Americans live with an autism spectrum disorder.

“Many children do not receive a final diagnosis until they are much older,” the CDC stated on its website. “This delay means children may not get the early help that they need.”

The CDC also said that some of the risk factors for autism include having siblings with autism, being born to older parents and having tuberous sclerosis, fragile X syndrome or other certain chromosomal/genetic conditions. In addition, taking the prescription drugs thalidomide and valproic acid while pregnant increases the risk of having a child with autism.

Research continues to uncover other important clinical findings regarding the condition. To mark Autism Awareness Month, Healio Family Medicine has compiled a list of the latest, most relevant articles for primary care providers who have patients with autism.
