SAN DIEGO – Thanks to the extraordinarily effective therapies and approaches to prevention currently available, turning around the trajectory of HIV/AIDS global pandemic is possible, according to Anthony S. Fauci, MD, director of the NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
However, more progress is needed, as 30,000 to 40,000 new infections happen each year in the United States, which is “unacceptable” given the tools that are available, he told Healio Internal Medicine at ACP Internal Medicine annual meeting.
“We’re working very hard to develop an HIV vaccine,” he said. “I see that that’s not going to occur at least for another several years.”
Full eradication of HIV/AIDS throughout the world is “not on the radar in the foreseeable future or maybe ever,” he added.
