VIDEO: Data on e-cigarettes' safety, value in cessation unclear

SAN DIEGO – The idea that e-cigarettes may be useful in helping people to discontinue use of combustible cigarettes has not been borne out by research, according to a presenter at the ACP Internal Medicine Annual Meeting.

“There’s a number of different studies that have come out that suggest that people who use e-cigarettes as part of their cessation attempt or following a cessation event actually are a little less likely to be able to keep the cigarettes down,” Frank T. Leone, MD, MS, Medical Director of the Comprehensive Smoking Treatment Center at the University of Pennsylvania, told Healio Internal Medicine.

Leone also noted that preliminary data from animal models has raised questions about the impact of e-cigarettes on the lungs.
