AAPCC partners with Safety 1st for National Poison Prevention Week
The American Association of Poison Control Centers has partnered with home safety brand Safety 1st to help promote National Poison Prevention Week and to curb pediatric exposure to toxic substances in the home.
According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC), nearly 50% of toxic and potentially toxic exposures involve children younger than 6 years. In addition, 98% of pediatric calls to poison centers occur at a residence, with the vast majority being unintentional and preventable. Most homes contain “hundreds of potentially toxic substances,” the organization said.
“AAPCC is thrilled to be partnering with Safety 1st, and we are tremendously grateful for its support,” Stephen T. Kaminski, JD, AAPCC CEO and executive director, said in a press release. “Pediatric poisoning prevention in the home continues to be a source of major concern for the experts at poison centers across the country.”
Safety 1st, which is owned by Dorel Juvenile, a segment of Dorel Industries Inc., produces equipment for the home to help protect children from gaining access to cabinets where toxic substances may be kept, as well as electrical outlets and other common, potentially hazardous places in the house.
It also produces a “Home Safety Calculator,” which “will also help guide you toward the areas of your home you need to focus on the most,” according to a company statement.
“Kids are smart, curious, and will get into anything,” Paul Powers, president of Dorel Juvenile USA, said in a press release. “We are proud to partner with the AAPCC, and to offer products like the Outsmart Collection, featuring advancements in child safety that can aid in the effort of keeping kids away from dangerous and toxic items.”
National Poison Prevention Week runs through Saturday, March 26.
