The FDA has approved the first U.S. generic version of Viagra, according to its website.

Teva Pharmaceuticals, manufacturer of the generic sildenafil citrate, will sell the medication in 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg tablets.

According to a previous press release, Teva reached an agreement with Pfizer, manufacturer of Viagra, to launch the generic drug in 2017. Teva will pay Pfizer royalties for a production license, according to a press release issued by Pfizer.

Teva confirmed to Healio Internal Medicine that the generic will be available in December 2017. The manufacturer will have exclusive rights to the generic drug for 180 days.

Teva noted in its press release that, according to sales data from September 2013, brand name Viagra had annual sales of nearly $1.2 billion in the United States. – by Chelsea Frajerman Pardes
