ABIM, ACCME release list of CME that qualifies for MOC

A partnership between the ABIM and the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education is resulting in "a more flexible, streamlined process to combine continuing medical education activities with Maintenance of Certification requirements," according to a blog post written by the organizations.

The message, from Furman S. McDonald, MD, MPH, ABIM senior vice president for academic and medical affairs, and Graham T. McMahon, MD, MMSc, Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) president and CEO, said that physicians will have more CME options and reporting education for Maintenance of Certification (MOC) points will be "seamless."

"The new partnership between the [ACCME] and ABIM now gives ABIM Board Certified physicians access to more accredited CME activities that meet ABIM’s MOC requirements, expanding the available options for earning MOC points," the post stated. "Many of the learning activities you’ve already been participating in such as grand rounds, conferences, case discussions, and reading medical journals can now earn both MOC points and CME credits."

According to the organizations, providers will be able to report CME activity using a physician's ABIM number.

CME activities that quality for MOC credit have been listed at ACCME's website. The ABIM and ACCME noted that they expect to add CME providers and CME activities completed in 2014 may still qualify.

"We’re confident this list will continue to expand — we update it regularly as more activities are added — and that it will serve as an important and useful resource as you continue to demonstrate you are staying current with medical knowledge and practice," the organizations stated.
