Web series targeting men’s health uses humor, language to engage ‘bad patients’

Path2Parenthood, Mount Sinai and Mark McGrath are teaming up to produce the new Web series ‘Urologist Nerds Drinking Beer,’ which will aim to reach men who are ‘notoriously bad patients’ and seldom visit the doctor, according to a press release.

“The web series gives us the opportunity to reach young men, particularly those from ages 18 to 45 in a less formal and casual venue,” Natan Bar-Charma, MD, director of male reproductive medicine and surgery at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, said in the release.

The series, hosted by Sugar Ray singer Mark McGrath, will address common health conditions men may face, including erectile dysfunction, testicular and prostate cancer, low testosterone, sexually-transmitted infections and steroid use. The eight-part series takes serious topics that may be overlooked by men who are not visiting a physician regularly and uses humor and language to connect with young men, according to the release.

Each episode, which runs approximately 3 minutes long, features Bar-Charma and three other urologists sitting and drinking beer while breaking down medical terms, describing symptoms, prevention techniques, treatment options for various health topics, along with the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The series pilot episode, ‘Ball Handling 101: How to Avoid (the C Word)’, Bar-Charma and colleagues instruct viewers on the proper way to conduct a testicular self-examination to detect testicle abnormalities early. Additional episode include ‘Big Delts and Baby Balls: Why You Should Avoid Steroids’, “Erectile Denial’, and ‘That Doesn’t Look Good…At All!’.
