New FDA portal streamlines advisory panel nominations

Nominations to the FDA for membership on the agency’s 33 advisory committees can now be submitted through an interactive online portal.

The agency designed the portal to create a “paperless, streamlined process” that will make the process of accepting, evaluating and nominating qualified individuals more efficient than the current email- or regular mail-based system.

“The portal allows applicants to complete their entire application online,” Jill Hartzler Warner, acting associate commissioner of the FDA’s Office of Special Medical Programs, said. “Applicants will experience an interactive, step-by-step process that eliminates confusion and accelerates the time frame for submitting and processing an application.”

The new system will create an applicant database that the agency hopes will enable it to develop metrics for assessing the entire applicant pool to identify qualified candidates to fill specific vacancies on advisory committees, according to a press release.

The agency asks potential candidates for information on financial holdings, employment, and research grants and/or contracts to evaluate possible conflicts of interest.
