The Department of Health and Human Services announced that since becoming law the Affordable Care Act has netted $4.8 billion in prescription drug savings for people with Medicare.

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced in a press release that 5.6 million seniors and people with disabilities have benefited from the savings, including 2.3 million people in the Medicare prescription “donut hole” coverage gap during the first 9 months of 2012.

“Medicare is stronger thanks to the health care law, offering new benefits at no cost to seniors,” Sebelius said.

HHS reported that this year more than 20.7 million people with original Medicare have used at least one no-cost preventive service. Annual wellness visits were logged by 2.13 million Americans, or 650,000 more than had used the service at the same point in 2011.
