KOLOA, Hawaii — In this video from Orthopedics Today Hawaii, Daniel Scott Horowitz, MD, discussed the importance of anatomic syndesmotic reduction to ensure positive outcomes for patients with ankle fractures.
“The common factor in cases that did not go well appeared to be malreduction of the syndesmosis,” he said. “We’ve learned from literature, and we’ve all learned from personal example that unless you get the syndesmosis reduced, you often retain some high degree of instability and patient outcomes are significantly worse.”
He added, “[For] anatomic reduction of the syndesmosis, almost always do an open anterior approach. This is an important factor in giving excellent results.”
