KOLOA, Hawaii — In this video from Orthopedics Today Hawaii, Michael L. Pearl, MD, spoke about the use of lower trapezius transfer for patients with irreparable rotator cuff tears and no active external rotation.

“It’s not a good operation for pain or if they have advanced cuff tear arthropathy changes, but for your 50-year-old [or] 60-year-old who does not have active external rotation, it is a great operation,” Pearl said.

Pearl noted lower trapezius transfer can be performed open or arthroscopically, in a variety of positions and with multiple allograft options.
