Key takeaways:

  • Among 107 medial quadriceps tendon femoral ligament reconstructions, researchers found a 5.1% complication rate.
  • Surgeons should consider this technique vs. medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction.

BOSTON — In this video from the Arthroscopy Association of North America Annual Meeting, Nancy Park, BS, discussed the low complication rates of patients who underwent medial quadriceps tendon femoral ligament reconstruction.

“We do believe that this is a technique that more orthopedic surgeons should consider adding to their repertoire,” she told Healio.

Park, a fourth-year medical student at Yale University, said medial quadriceps tendon femoral ligament (MQTFL) reconstruction was likely developed as a response to the incidence of iatrogenic patellar fractures associated with medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction.

“Overall, we found a very low complication rate in terms of the isolated MQTFL reconstruction group of about 5.1%,” Park said. “We do believe that MQTFL reconstruction is a very safe procedure. None of our patients in our series experienced an iatrogenic patella fracture. No patients experienced over-tensioning of the medial graft.”
