NEW ORLEANS — Orthopedic surgeons should understand their goals and audience and be consistent in their branding when using social media, according to a presenter here.

“Social media, in my opinion, is a great equalizer. You can be a student, a resident, a chairperson. You can be in private practice, academia and all be part of the discussion without hierarchies in place,” Nancy Yen Shipley, MD, said in her presentation at the Arthroscopy Association of North America Annual Meeting.

Prior to using social media, orthopedic surgeons should identify their goals and audience and how speaking to their audience will help them reach their goals, according to Shipley. She said this information can help surgeons choose the social media platform that is right for them.

“There are so many [social media platforms] to choose from. How do you choose?” Shipley said. “None of us have time to be on social media all day, so another way to narrow it down is thinking about where your desired audience spends their time.”

Shipley said orthopedic surgeons should share their content on their social media platform. This content should also be available on their website or on a podcast, so it does not disappear if the social media platform no longer appears, she added.

After opening an account, Shipley said orthopedic surgeons can choose to watch, listen and learn before posting regularly and engaging with other users.

“Don’t forget also about safety and security. Don’t forget about two-factor authentication. There are plenty of scammers out there,” Shipley said.
