Key takeaways:

  • A novel machine learning algorithm could improve the predictive capacity for ACL reconstruction revision procedures.
  • Further research is necessary to implement the algorithm in hospital systems.

WASHINGTON — In this video, Kinjal Vasavada, MD, discusses a novel machine learning algorithm intended to predict surgical outcomes in the Multicenter ACL Revision Study cohort.

“This presents us with the opportunity to transform revision ACL reconstruction stratification of risk from a subjective consideration based on surgeon knowledge and experience to an evidence-based, quantitative measure in addition to surgeon knowledge and experience,” Vasavada said about the study presented at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Annual Meeting. “This work has the potential to guide preoperative counseling, shared decision-making at the bedside, intentional risk mitigation and fairer risk-adjusted reimbursement for hospital systems and surgeons.”

“We have a long way to go to get this work to the bedside,” she added. “That includes studying other outcomes that are important for the success of a revision ACL [reconstruction], external validation studies and other validation studies with datasets outside of the [Multicenter ACL Revision Study] MARS cohort and building the risk calculator.”
