KOLOA, Hawaii — In this video from Orthopedics Today Hawaii, Scott A. Sigman, MD, spoke about opioid-sparing shoulder surgery.

“Opioids are highly addictive. We need to have an all-hands-on-deck approach to try to minimize opioids,” Sigman said.

Sigman spoke about two important updates on opioid guidelines and legislation. The CDC has recently revised opioid-prescribing guidelines. Additionally, Congress has passed the Non-opioids Prevent Addiction in the Nation (NOPAIN) Act as part of the Omnibus Spending Bill of 2022. Sigman said the passage allows Medicare patients to undergo surgery at ASCs and hospital outpatient departments, have opioid alternatives, and “they are going to be paid for by Medicare.”
