INDIANAPOLIS — To better manage patients with myopia, optometrists must understand normal myopia progression and axial elongation, as well as trends in treatment efficacy, according to a speaker at Academy 2024.

“We’ve shown from our work that myopia progression slows with age,” Mark A. Bullimore, MCOptom, PhD, FAAO, FARVO, a consultant and adjunct professor at University of Houston College of Optometry, said in this Healio video.

Bullimore also noted that treatment efficacy changes over time, with “an initial bump” in the first year, followed by a drop in subsequent years.

“You need to bear that in mind and remember because of that you may see more progression in the second year than you do in the first year,” he said.
