NEW YORK — NewSight Reality introduced its Transparent Optical Module 2.0, technology that facilitates the use of augmented reality in spectacle lenses, at Vision Expo East.
“It’s getting information we typically get from a screen without being disintermediated from the rest of your surroundings,” NewSight Reality CEO Read Ziegler told Healio in an interview. “It provides enhanced information and [allows you to] be present in your surroundings.”
Advances in the TOM 2.0 include a tubular stray light shielding solution, which focuses light toward the user’s eye; a microlens optics design that preserves transparency and increases power efficiency; and a scalable platform, according to a company press release.
“We’ve created a transparent optical module, which is the enabling engine to generate AR without using bulky projectors,” Ziegler said. “We’re talking about eye wear as the delivery platform. You can still see the world as usual, but when you need that information it’s populated. You experience your surroundings fully, just like with your regular eye wear. The technology is lighter weight and more power efficient.”
Doctors can wear the technology during patient care and access history, test results and other data on a patient through the eye wear, Ziegler said.
“The model is ready to go into end products — into doctors’ offices, eye wear, binoculars, scopes — where information in the line of sight would be beneficial,” he added.
NewSight Reality is collaborating with Kent State University, Mojo Vision and Synapse to advance this area of technology, according to the release.
