NEW YORK — Patients with moderate to severe headache experienced a clinically significant reduction in headache symptoms after wearing Neurolens contoured prism technology, a company executive said at Vision Expo East.

Neurolens conducted a double-masked, randomized, crossover clinical study at 10 practices across the U.S., Neurolens director of marketing Chase Cutler, told Healio.

“Our results are comparable to other pharmacological interventions but with none of the side effects.” Chase Cutler

“We tried to make the study population representative of what you’d see in practice,” he said. “We included people with moderate to severe headaches and used the Headache Impact Test (HIT-6), a widely used headache questionnaire, to determine the severity and impact on their life.”

Cutler explained that 170 patients aged 18 to 60 years were first given an updated glasses prescription with a premium control lens. After about 30 days they were administered the HIT-6 to establish a baseline and ensure the headaches were not being caused by the wrong prescription.

Some patients received the control lens, and some wore the Neurolens. After 30 days, they took the HIT-6 again. The lenses were switched, and the patients took the questionnaire again after 30 days.

“It was a total of four visits,” Cutler said. “The optometrist and the patient did not know which lens was which.”

The mean HIT-6 score was 63 at baseline, and after Neurolens wear it was 58, he said.

“This was considered clinically significant,” Cutler said. “A 2.5 drop would be considered clinically significant. Compared to baseline, it’s life-changing. On the HIT-6, if you score more than 60, it’s recommended you see a doctor right away, as it’s a debilitating impact on your life.

“Our results are comparable to other pharmacological interventions but with none of the side effects,” he added.
