NEW ORLEANS — Nearly 90% of dry eye disease specialists surveyed use artificial tears and hot compresses as first-line treatment for meibomian gland dysfunction, according to a poster presented at Academy ’23.

“We were surprised to find out that even though artificial tears and hot compresses are palliative in nature, they were still the first line of treatment for many dry eye specialists across America,” Mahnia Madan, OD, FAAO, from Vancouver Eye Doctor, told Healio.

Madan and colleagues surveyed 98 dry eye specialists about their first, second and third lines of treatment for meibomian gland dysfunction.

“We found that 87% of those doctors responded that their first-line treatment for MGD management would be artificial tears and hot compresses,” Madan said.
