BARCELONA, Spain — In this Healio Video Perspective from the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting, Jorge L. Alió del Barrio, MD, PhD, speaks about an AI-based project for the automated early diagnosis of keratoconus.

Diagnosing early keratoconus is critical in refractive surgery, but refractive surgery is usually not performed by cornea specialists. There is a need for automated tools for the diagnosis of suspected keratoconus, Alió del Barrio said.

Artificial neural networks have been developed based on topography data on the anterior and posterior surface of the cornea, but they are still unable to detect forme fruste or subclinical keratoconus.

“Several groups, including us, have been working in order to try to enhance the performance of those neural networks in order to provide new data from either biomechanics from the Corvis (Oculus) or epithelial maps from anterior segment OCT,” Alió del Barrio said.
