BARCELONA, Spain — In this Healio Video Perspective from the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting, Jorge L. Alió, MD, PhD, shares his method for premium IOL selection.

“In this constellation of lenses that you have ... how do you distinguish the value of good lenses from those that are not that good?” he said.

Alió suggested looking into the patient’s visual performance and visual potential to achieve emmetropia. Then, he selects a lens depending on the quality of the retina image that can provide the best optical quality in the eye. Finally, he looks at the patient’s monocular defocus curve and measures contrast sensitivity in mesopic conditions.
