There’s been a lot of evidence to suggest that diabetes can accelerate in patients who are pregnant and have a history of diabetes. Studies have shown that diabetic eye disease can progress, especially in the first and second trimesters of pregnancy because there are so many hormonal changes and vascular changes occurring in the pregnant mother. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that any woman who has diabetes and is pregnant should have a baseline examination once she discovers that she is pregnant. And then depending on the level of diabetic eye disease detected, she should have routine follow-up exams during the rest of her pregnancy to monitor for any diabetic retinopathy complications.
