  • EyeSustain is a global coalition aimed at increasing the sustainability of eye care.
  • A workshop at the ASCRS meeting fostered discussion on strategies with eye care companies.

SAN DIEGO — In this Healio Video Perspective from the ASCRS meeting, John A. Hovanesian, MD, FACS, speaks about EyeSustain, a global coalition intended to increase the sustainability of eye care.

It is sponsored by the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, American Academy of Ophthalmology, and European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and is partnered with 30 global ophthalmology societies.

A workshop at the meeting brought together leaders of the largest companies in the eye care space to discuss ways of cooperating with the common goal of reducing the environmental impact of surgery.

“The eye care industry is very interested, as much as we physicians, our patients and our staff, in finding more sustainable practices, and we are seeing real change happening,” Hovanesian said.

Initiatives such as replacing printed instructions with QR codes, promoting sustainable packaging with biodegradable, compostable material, reducing the use of plastics, and making shipping more efficient are underway.

“In many cases, regulations stand in the way,” Hovanesian said, but he is confident that cooperation within the ophthalmology community will help to overturn those obstacles.
