VIDEO: Wearable EEG system provides real-time data on patients with epilepsy
A wearable, portable electroencelphalogram, or EEG, system will allow clinicians to rapidly review real-time seizure-related neurologic events in those with epilepsy, Epitel CEO and founder Mark Lehmkuhle, PhD, stated in this Healio video.
“We are trying to create EEG so that it’s more accessible and equitable so that we can get this system into the smallest of clinics at the point of care during an emergency,” Lehmkuhle said. “Or get them out to your home, so that you don’t have to come into a specialty EEG clinic in order to get an EEG.”
The main component is a self-contained EEG machine that attaches to the scalp. Two sensors each are placed on the forehead and behind the ears. If the patient needs to make a hospital visit, Lehmkuhle noted, the leads connect wirelessly to a tablet, and if the individual wears the device at home, the leads transmit to a cell phone.
Data collected are then transmitted to the cloud, from which a neurologist or epileptologist can review and interpret EEG results in real time.
The device is cleared by the FDA for up to 30 days outside the hospital, Lehmkuhle added, while machine learning is employed to detect and interpret data from seizure events.
