The American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases Foundation announced its investment of $4.06 million in research and career development grants awarded to 36 researchers and clinicians, according to a press release.
This year’s award total is $715,00 more than the award total in 2017, making it the largest level of funding in the history of AASLD and AASLD Foundation.
“This record-breaking level of investment demonstrates the Foundation’s commitment to providing critical funding for liver research, securing education and training for those caring for people with liver disease, encouraging young investigators new to the field and increasing access to trained providers for people with liver disease,” Bruce R. Bacon, MD, FAASLD, AASLD Foundation chair, said in the release.
Additionally, the Foundation will invest more than $170,000 in travel awards this fall, including the Emerging Liver Scholars Program and the Abstract Travel Awards. The awards were designed to enable young researchers to present their work at the Liver Meeting, set for Nov. 9-13, in San Francisco.
“Despite recent strides and successes in the treatment of many liver diseases, AASLD Foundation understands there is still much work to be done and more funding must be made available to those interested in hepatology,” Bacon said. “Since 2000, more than $47 million has been committed by AASLD, and now its Foundation, to invest in innovative hepatology research and in the people who study and treat liver disease.”
