LONDON — HCV Next and Healio.com/hepatology will offer live coverage from the International Liver Congress, the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of the Liver, this week.

The congress, held April 9-13, is expected to attract more than 9,500 participants and will feature experts speaking on research related to the liver; viral hepatitis; cirrhosis and its complications; liver transplantation; fatty liver disease; and their treatments.

Also this week, WHO will be presenting its first global guidelines on how to effectively treat hepatitis C virus infection (HCV). The guidelines, which will be released on the eve of the conference, will provide recommendations on screening for HCV, medical care on how to slow disease progression and information on safe and effective curative treatments. Speakers at the announcement will include Stefan Wiktor, MD, MPH, team lead for WHO’s global hepatitis program; Charles Gore, World Hepatitis Alliance; Wahid Doss, MD, National Hepatology and Tropical Medicine Institute; and Isabelle Andrieux-Meyer, MD, Médecins Sans Frontières.

“As a pediatric hepatologist, I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to share experience and knowledge with adult hepatology colleagues during the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) meetings over the last 3 decades,” GiorginaMieli-Vergani,MD, PhD, professor and director of pediatric hepatology at King’s College Hospital and honorary president for the congress, said on the EASL website. “London, arguably the cradle of hepatology, will offer a lively environment for a meeting which has all the requisites for being highly successful.

“The huge amount of abstracts submitted (2,855) and large number of participants expected confirm the central role of EASL in the international hepatology scene.”

In addition to breaking news, Healio.com will offer onsite video interviews from presenters at the conference. Readers also can subscribe to newswires featuring the conference’s top headlines. Visit Healio.com/hepatology throughout the week to read the latest news.
