Baxter International issued a voluntary recall at the hospital/user level for five lots of dextrose injection and sodium chloride injection because of concerns over particulate matter that could lead to damage to the liver and kidney, heart attack or stroke, according to a news release.
One lot of 5% dextrose injection and four lots of 0.9% sodium chloride injection are covered in the recall, the release said. The particulates also could lead to allergic reactions, irritation or inflammation.
No adverse events have been reported regarding these lots, and the cause of the recall has been identified and resolved, according to the release.
The dextrose injection — product code 2B0089, lot number P285288 — comes in 100 mL containers and is a source of water and calories when intravenously injected.
The sodium chloride solution — product codes 2B1308, 2B1302 and 2B1309, lot numbers P297283, P292326, P293993 and P293514 — comes in 50 and 100 mL bottles. It is a source of water and electrolytes and is used as a priming solution in hemodialysis procedures, the release said.
